Episode 4 of Comunidad Presente includes an in-depth interview with Santiago Maestas who is a long-time resident and small farmer in the South Valley. Santiago is also the President of the South Valley Regional Association of Acequias, an organization committed to revitalization and protection of acequias in the South Valley. In his interview Santiago talks about the importance of acequias and the battles the Valle de Atrisco has faced (e.g. the Santolina development and Los Chaves revolt).
This episode also features a report out from the Flor de Toloache performance that took place at the North 4th Arts Center over the summer. We were able to interview one of the original members of the all female mariachi powerhouse – Shae Fiol. We also feature two great songs (“Que Nunca Se Olvida” and “Cancion de la Acequia”) from David Garcia – the multi-talented musician, maestro, and acequia advocate from northern New Mexico.
Episode 3 of Comunidad Presente features a report out of the Humans of NM exhibit opening at Duel Brewery. We interviewed Rafael Martinez and others in attendance. We also cover the groundbreaking for the farm phase of the South Valley Health Commons. Featured music is from La Llorona, a local band that played at the Humans of NM opening. We interviewed brothers Javier and Marco Sandoval. Thanks for tuning in!
Episode 2 features an in-depth interview on the proposed Santolina housing development with Juan Reynosa, Environmental Justice Organizer with the SouthWest Organizing Project (SWOP). The many negative impacts this massive sprawl development would have on local communities are discussed.
Episode 2 also features a report out on the Acequia Talk & Walks happening in the South Valley. Hear the stories of family members Albert Sanchez and Diana Pino as they walk along the Atrisco Acequia.
We end the episode with a song from Stoic Frame, “No Tendrian Agua.” Gracias to Keith Sanchez and the rest of the Stoic Frame crew of years back, for their great music.
